My painting “Embracing: Me and My Twin embracing each other for love:” has been selected for display in this year’s exhibition, themed “A Time Within A Time.”
This painting explores my fascination with twins in the West African Universe.
As the celebrated African Novelist Chinua Achebe narrates in his classic, Things Fall Apart, twins born were left to die in the evil forest. They were seen as the representation of evil. In recent times, however, it will be unthinkable to see twins as a representation of evil.
I invite my audience to imagine twins as a unity but also as a difference.

Twins as oneness explores the tension between sameness and difference: that is, beings that are one but have different identities.

Twins as Oneness becomes a metaphor suggesting that “by …  embracing our interconnectedness, society can embark on a journey contributing to a more harmonious world.” Why is the difference between the same being important? “By acknowledging differences, society can discover that these differences can enrich lives and point to ways of things in new and different ways.”

Because twins are “the same” but not the same, my art using twins shows how two moments may emerge from one origin, look identical but feel completely different; how two lives can start as a unity or together but unfold in completely different ways.

I am grateful to Monica S. Camin @monicascamin, Juror and Curator, for including my work in this exhibition, and thanks to the Monmouth Museum for their support.
